Letter to Meta

Dear META,

I woke one morning to find it was 2050—twenty-five years into the future from today. The world stretched before me, a marvel to behold, its progress gleaming like a beacon of what humanity could achieve. People no longer trudged to offices; most jobs hummed along remotely. Flying cars adorned the skies—not a chaotic swarm, but a graceful dance of order and precision. Cell phones had vanished into history, relics replaced by your gift to us: sleek, smart, seamless channels of connection. Terms like NFTs, Metaverse, and augmented reality shed their once-foreign skins, now woven into daily life, understood and embraced with ease. But more than all this, I’m writing to honor the vital role you, Meta, played in crafting a world so beautiful, advanced, and fluid—a legacy that flows through every innovation. That’s why I pen these words.

In this new world I’d stumbled into, I was lucky to have a tour guide named Kendrick—Ken, for short. Ken was an AI black humanoid robot, seemingly sparked to life the moment I arrived in 2050. His face always glowed with a warm smile, and he was endlessly eager to lead me through this strange future. I hadn’t yet grasped where I was or what was happening, but with Ken’s friendly presence beside me, I felt bold enough to face it all.

“Here’s a Meta Quest headset,” Ken said cheerfully, handing me a sleek, slim, nearly weightless device etched with a delicate calligraphic mark. I slipped it on, and the first face I saw was Ken’s—now in a fresh avatar.

“Welcome to the Metaverse, MGee,” he said with a grin as bright as the horizon. “I’m sharing an invite to Chris Brown’s concert in Los Angeles. Accept it so we can go have some fun!” Ken’s enthusiasm bubbled over.

I’d been a Chris Brown fan my whole life, replaying his latest track Residuals back in 2025 like it was my heartbeat. It felt like Meta had peeked into my soul and crafted this custom Quest band just for me. My mind spun—how could I be in Nigeria and Los Angeles at once, soaking in a concert from what seemed like my own cozy corner?

“Accept the invite already, MGee,” Ken urged, his voice loud but brimming with excitement, not aggression. I did, and—boom!—I was swept into a concert, Chris Brown striding onto the stage.

“Chris Brown!!” I shouted at the top of my lungs, my voice lost in the roar. Living what felt like a live show etched itself into my memory, a gift I owed to you, Meta. When it ended, I pulled off the headset, and there stood Ken, beaming with that same cheerful grin.

“Had fun, right?” he asked.

“Yeah, I did. Watching Chris sing Residuals was unreal,” I replied.

“All this and more is possible,” Ken said, his tone light as air. “This is 2050, not 2025. Meta’s made everything effortless—phone calls without phones, concerts, buying digital spaces or property, attending meetings, you name it. Take your time to soak it in; I know it feels wild and unreal to you, coming from 2025. We’ve got another beautiful adventure coming soon,” he concluded, his joy like a spark in the room.

Ken and I strolled through the streets of Lagos, and as I’d mentioned before, the city was a wonder to witness. The world had leaped forward in ways I could hardly fathom. Like phantoms, we slipped into a hospital, straight into a surgical room. The doctors there didn’t notice us, their focus locked on the operation at hand, while we lingered silently.

“Pay close attention to what unfolds in the next few hours,” Ken urged me.

We observed with sharp focus as the patient on the table twitched, his body jerking as if wrestling with death itself. Strain tightened the doctors’ faces, a silent storm of worry. One of them spoke up, suggesting they summon their senior—a doctor supposedly on vacation and, I mistakenly assumed, out of reach. Then, a doctor barked, “Call Dr. Ben,” to a small bot-like device stamped with the word Meta on its shell. In an instant, a holographic figure flared to life from the gadget—a man in his mid-thirties, clad in a summery outfit.

“Good evening, Dr. Ben,” one of the doctors greeted, cutting through the tense pause.

“Sorry to disrupt your vacation, but we need your skill to save this patient’s life.”

Dr. Ben, a cardiologist specializing in cardiovascular care, caught the urgency in his colleague’s tone and jumped in, issuing crisp instructions they followed without hesitation. Two hours later, the surgery wrapped up—a success.

“Augmented reality bridges the gap between our physical world and the digital realm,” Ken explained to me.

“Meta’s packed with AR tools like these in its toolkit. The Metaverse, a fully virtual universe, has transformed healthcare. Take this for instance: in there, medical students practice complex surgeries on avatars designed as case studies. You’ll see more when I show you the Meta Classroom,” he finished with a note of promise.

When we returned to what I assumed was my home—the very spot where I’d first landed in 2050—I sat trying to digest everything I’d seen, especially that hospital scene. Could someone truly stand among us from miles away without the Metaverse making it possible? Had the world grown this far? Could cell phones really fade into oblivion? At that moment, my mind wrestled with what might be real and what couldn’t be. Ken cut through my swirling thoughts.

“MGee,” he said, “before I take you to the Meta Classroom, I need to break down what the Metaverse is—your face looks like a map of confusion.”

He began: “Picture the Metaverse as a bridge linking the physical and digital realms, a mirror of reality built on block chain technology. It’s a virtual space where people connect, work together, and enjoy themselves through tools like virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, and more. Platforms like Decentraland, Sandbox, Bloktopia, and Meta Horizon Worlds are turning this dream into reality. Virtual reality, or VR, pulls you into a computer-crafted world—think of the Chris Brown concert you joined; that’s VR at work, plunging you into a simulated space with headsets, gloves, or goggles. Augmented reality, AR, layers digital details onto the real world, enhancing what’s already there. Dr. Ben guiding his team in that operating room shows you how AR overlays expertise onto a live scene. In the Metaverse, people own digital plots they can rent out, shops where they sell goods—it’s an entire virtual universe. Transactions hum along with Meta Coin and other cryptocurrencies. I could go on, but this should light up what you’ve seen so far and hint at what’s still ahead.” Ken wrapped up his rundown, sounding like a teacher closing a long lesson. After his talk, I had a clearer grip on what I’d lived through and what lay waiting down the road.

“The Meta Classroom,” Ken continued, “is a virtual hub where learning and academic pursuits come alive. Thanks to Meta, it’s now entirely possible to study from home and earn legitimate credentials—whether it’s a graduate degree, postgraduate certificate, diploma, or any other level.”

He paused, then added, “Slip on your headset for a hands-on demo.”

I quickly grabbed my headset, logged into the Meta Classroom using my old 2025 Facebook account, and—to my surprise—it clicked right in. There stood Ken, waiting for me, this time in a sharp, professor-like avatar. Before me stretched a lineup of top-tier universities—Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, and more, their logos floating like stars in no set pattern.

“Licensed institutions have tapped into the Meta Classroom, as you can plainly see, MGee,” Ken said.

“Once a student pays their fees, they just pick their school, enter their login details and school ID, and dive into classes instantly. This sweeps away the old brick-and-mortar setup where you had to show up in person. The Meta Classroom turns learning into something seamless and enjoyable, letting students join from anywhere on the globe. Plus, they’ve got a wealth of resources at their fingertips to tackle tasks and quizzes.” He leaned in, his tone shifting with excitement.

“Here’s where it gets wild: imagine a space where education isn’t just lectures but a living experience. For medical students, say in surgery, they can operate on lifelike humanoid avatars—every cut and stitch feels real. Mistakes? No problem—they’re corrected on the spot, no lives at stake, just a safe sandbox to master their craft. Beyond that, I see the Meta Classroom as a place where history students walk through ancient cities, engineers build virtual bridges, and artists paint in 3D realms—all tailored to their pace, all powered by Meta’s tech. It’s not just a classroom; it’s a universe of possibility,” Ken concluded, his words landing with quiet conviction.

Dear Meta, I’ve glimpsed the future, and it compelled me to put pen to paper. You’ve shaped a world breathtaking in its beauty, a place where life flows smoother than it does today. Your dreams for the Metaverse have blossomed fully—a vision I’m convinced will take root well before 2050. Every corner of existence—health, education, work, entertainment—bears the mark of your positive touch. Your groundbreaking tools have paved the way for a radiant tomorrow. The world may not yet be primed for the Metaverse, but a time arrived when it stood as a living testament to what you, Meta, always intended: a seamless fusion of dream and reality. As I shed the headset, leaving 2050 behind, I carry a spark of that future with me. Ken’s guidance showed me not just what could be, but what will be—a legacy of connection and wonder, all thanks to you.
